Incomplete Medical Evidence

One of the most frequent reasons for denial is missing or insufficient medical documentation. The Social Security Administration (SSA) requires detailed records showing:

• Diagnoses, test results, and treatment history.
• Notes from doctors explaining how your condition limits your ability to work.
• Evidence that your disability has lasted, or will last, at least 12 months.

Without thorough documentation, the SSA may decide your disability is not severe enough.

Earning Too Much Income

SSDI is meant for people unable to engage in substantial gainful activity (SGA). If you are still working and earning above the monthly SGA limit, your claim may be denied, even if you have a legitimate medical condition.

Condition Does Not Meet SSA’s Definition of Disability

Not every medical condition qualifies for SSDI. The SSA denies claims if:

• The condition is not severe enough.
• It is not listed in the SSA’s Blue Book of impairments.
• You can still perform other types of work despite your limitations.

Failure to Follow Treatment

If medical records show that you did not follow prescribed treatments or stopped attending doctor visits, the SSA may deny your claim. The reasoning is that they cannot determine if your condition would improve with proper treatment.

Errors or Missing Information on the Application

Even simple mistakes, such as missing work history details, incomplete forms, or incorrect contact information for medical providers, can result in a denial. Accuracy and attention to detail are critical when applying.

Prior Denials Without New Evidence

If you have been denied SSDI before and reapply without providing new medical evidence or showing a change in your condition, the SSA is likely to deny your application again.
